Say what you want about Michael Jackson. I’ve heard all the jokes, insults, and ridicule for idolizing him throughout the years but my opinion of him has not and will not change.

Anyways, with that said I went to Michael Jackson’s memorial on July 7th, 2009. I’ve already said how much influence he’s had on my life in another Tumblr post so I’ll just talk about my experience at the memorial. I was planning to just post pictures as a slideshow, but I wanted to talk about my experience than just show what I saw. Sooo this is going to be a ridiculously long blog filled with pictures.

My sisters and I left for LA around 9am, on the way ABC 7 News called me and wanted to meet up on the way and do a quick interview in which I did the moonwalk for them. We got to LA at 4pm and went straight to the Dodgers Stadium (boo Dodgers suck) to get the memorial tickets. When we got within 5 blocks, there were a lot of police and barricades that we had to go through. We had to do three or four stops with the police where we had to show my printed voucher before we actually got to the stadium.

Once we got to the Dodgers Stadium, the process to get the tickets was actually very quick and organized, I was very impressed. We didn’t even have to get out of the car, all we had to do was show the voucher and whoever was attending the memorial (my older sister and I) had to stick out their hand out the window so the employees could put on the wristband and give the ticket.

After we got the tickets, we went to the Staples Center so I could meet up with someone from News10 to do an interview. I was planning to sign the memorial wall first but the line was wrapped around the building and the wait was about 2-3hrs long and we didn’t have enough time. I did my interview with News10, did the moonwalk for them which was kind of awkward because I did it in front of strangers and wasn’t expecting to do the moonwalk.

The next morning I woke up at 5:30am to get ready for my phone interviews with San Diego’s old school station 92.5 and News10. It was the fastest that I’ve ever gotten up out of bed considering that I’m not a morning person. I recorded myself doing the phone interviews so I could upload them to YouTube, which was the reason that kept me from posting this blog because I never got around to doing it. If anybody really wants to see the phone interviews, just let me know and I’ll upload them.

We left the hotel at 7am to the Staples Center. On the way we were listening to the radio station that interviewed me, 92.5 hosted by Jagger and Kristi who were following my twitter throughout the morning and telling their listeners what my updates were saying. They said that my twitter account was “interesting, because you seem to twitter your every move” it was only because I had family and friends told me to, but I think I would’ve done it anyways lol, I was just encouraged to do so. They called me once again on the road since I was stuck in traffic, out of all the people that interviewed me, I would say that they were the most fun people to talk to.

As we got closer to the Staples Center, the amount of police and barricades were increasing. Luckily for us, we didn’t have to park anywhere (cheapest parking spot around the area was $35) since we were getting dropped off. We weren’t even dropped off at Staples because the traffic was insane, so we were dropped off two blocks away and walked from there.

When we got to the Staples Center, there was a sea of people waiting in line to get into the doors but we went around the crowd and found a shorter line. We waited for about 30min until they started letting people inside the building which was about 8am. Once I got through security and was handed the memorial program of Michael Jackson, 92.5’s Jagger and Kristi called me to ask what was the mood/vibe like inside the building. There was a lot of confusion with people trying to figure out where to go, some were already preparing their tissues as they were walking around, and some were excited that they were actually inside.

My sister and I asked around to where our seats were because we had no idea where to go. As the employees were pointing out the direction we had to go, we were getting a little excited because we sense that we were getting closer and closer to the stage since we went through a VIP entrance. We walked through a couple of long hallways and once we found our section, we were surprised to hwo close we were to the stage compared to the rest of the Staples.

We were seated at about 9am and we just sat and waited for the memorial service to start. As the Staples Center was slowly filling up with more and more people, they were playing some…easy-listening(?, not sure if that’s the right word, they didn’t play any of his upbeat songs) Michael Jackson songs such as “Rock With You”, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”, “PYT”, and “Baby Be Mine”.

Oh yeah, my sister took all the pictures because I didn’t want to be distracted from the memorial by trying to get good pictures or anything like that.

It felt surreal that I was looking at the same stage where Michael Jackson was rehearsing just a week before. I tried to make out some faces on the floor to see if there were any celebrities but the whole place was dimly lit so I couldn’t really see anybody. Smokey Robinson came up to the stage unannounced as people were still taking their seats to read Diana Ross’s and Nelson Mandela’s condolences. After that, the whole building was completely silent and the only thing you could hear were the A/C vents. A lot of police started to come in and the Jackson family soon walked in after them. Everybody stood up and cheered for them as they took their seats.

The memorial began with a choir singing “We Are Going To See The King” as the Jackson brothers brought out Michael Jackson’s casket. None of us knew when to expect the casket was going to arrive, but when it did everyone started yelling out Michael’s name. When I saw them bring out the casket, I couldn’t believe that I was in the presence of the King of Pop but I was saddened that it was in this sort of situation, I didn’t want to see him like this.

They didn’t have any announcements or presentations for the speakers, so I didn’t know who some people were when they went up to the podium. The first person that came out was the Jackson family’s pastor, Lucious Smith which said “In his beautiful and very human heart, MJ wanted nothing more than to give to the world and perhaps be loved back in return. Through his words, his music and his countless good deeds, Michael did so much to try to heal our world.”

Even though there were many celebrities attending, it didn’t really matter to me that it was a star-studded event, because all I really wanted to see was the King of Pop himself. From where I was seated, I could see the backstage area and I saw some people getting ready but I couldn’t tell who they were until they were onstage. Most people were looking at the jumbotron above to see who it really was, but I could tell who they were as they walked out before their faces where shown on the big screen such as Mariah Carey.

My view

Then Queen Latifah out of all people came up to the stage, I just thought that was random but I did like her speech though. Lionel Richie then came out to perform “Jesus Is Love” followed by Motown founder, Barry Gordy.

The only time I was actually had a feeling of being starstruck other than seeing Michael Jackson’s casket and his family was when I saw Stevie Wonder on stage. I was touched by the things he said before he played “Never Dreamed You’d Leave In Summer/My Destiny”. As he was performing, I think you could tell that Stevie Wonder was still grieving of Michael Jackson’s death in his voice.

After that, Kobe Bryant(another person that I thought was random to appear onstage) and Magic Johnson came up to the podium. Magic Johnson’s story about eating Kentucky Fried Chicken with Michael Jackson changed the somber mood of the Staples which gave all of us a nice laugh.

Jennifer Hudson came out to perform “Will You Be There” which I thought was nice, but didn’t do the song justice in my opinion. Up until that performance, I didn’t shed a tear throughout the memorial which made me think that there was something wrong with me because almost everyone around me has cried or was crying. But at the end of Hudson’s performance, they played an audio clip of Michael Jackson saying his prayer at the end of the song which made me start to cry. I’m not really an emotional person, but as I was hearing him speak and looking at his casket, it REALLY hit me just at that moment that the person I’ve listened to throughout my childhood and idolized really was gone. The vibe around the Staples was just really somber with everyone crying around me, I don’t think it would possible for any MJ fan to NOT cry at the memorial.

Normally I wouldn’t admit to this but it’s Michael Jackson so whatever. When news of MJ’s death started spreading, it affected me a lot but I didn’t shed a tear until while I was listening to his music and the song “Will You Be There” started to play and the end of the song where he was saying his prayer. I never expected to cry to that song and neither at the memorial. I was still crying from Jennifer Hudson’s performance even after it was over (yeah, call me whatever you like because of that cause I don’t care) Reverend Al Sharpton went up to the podium, and his speech really got the audience into it which had people cheering in agreement with the things he said especially when he spoke to the kids, “There was nothing strange about your daddy. It was strange what your daddy had to deal with, but he dealt with.”

Out of all the performances in the memorial, I would have to say that John Mayer’s performance of “Human Nature” on the guitar was the most memorable to me. It was followed by what I thought was the best speaker which was Brooke Shields.

When Jermaine came out to perform Michael Jackson’s favorite song, “Smile” you could see and hear the pain through his voice and his eyes which got people to start tearing up including me. Not many people noticed, but in the middle of the Staples was a teleprompter displaying the words and the lyrics. I saw that Jermaine messed up in the beginning of the song, but he got the rest of it down.

I sort of felt kinda bad for the next speakers, Martin Luther King III and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. For every performance and speaker up to them, each one of them had a standing ovation once they finished but with these speakers not a lot of people stood up for them and they didn’t clap as much as the other speakers.

Latoya, Paris, Katherine, Blanket, Prince, Joe, and Janet

Usher came out to perform “Gone Too Soon” which was pretty sad because it was the first song I thought of when MJ passed away. It got really sad at the end where he walked up to the casket and almost cried during his performance. He was followed by Smokey Robinson who came up to the podium again and changed the vibe around the Staples again with some light laughter as he talked about MJ singing his song.

Then some little kid came onto the stage to perform “Who’s Lovin You” who I thought was pretty good, but I couldn’t help but think while I was watching “Uhh who is this kid and what’s the reason for him performing?” Kenny Ortega then came out afterwards and explained that the kid’s name was Shaheen Jafargholi and was supposed to perform with MJ in London.

It was near the end of the memorial where I started to cry again (yeah so what, do something) when they performed “We Are The World” and “Heal The World”. Everybody in the Staples Center stood up waving their arms and sang along. It was a really moving experience, I don’t know how else to explain but I guess it’s just one of those things where you just had to be there to understand.

After they performed the songs, Randy and Jermaine said their last words to us about MJ which was pretty sad. Then unexpectingly, when Paris stood up to the microphone, the Staples turned dead silent to listen and once she spoked the words, “I just want to say ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine. I just wanted to say I love him so much.” Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE in the Staples Center was crying.

As it finished, they played “Man In The Mirror” while they carried out the casket, and everyone just started to yell out Michael’s name. I was quiet during the whole memorial because I wanted to hear and pay attention to everything. Once I saw that they were carrying out the casket, I knew it was my one and only chance to ever yell out to him like they did in concerts which I did.

So like I said before, the whole memorial was a really moving experience and it’s one of those things where you just to be there to understand the vibe and the emotions going around the Staples Center. I am so grateful and blessed that I was given the chance to be there and I will never forget it.

Rest In Peace Michael Jackson, I love you more.
