Michael was diagnosed with Discoid Lupus around the same time as he was diagnosed with Vitiligo in ’83 (according to what his Dr told the Grand Jury deposition in 1994). He presented with one of the trademark symptoms of the illness, the Malar or Butterfly Rash in 83 which reappeared in ’86…
However LaToya has said he was diagnosed in 1979 – of course, knowing LaToya, she could have been talking about his diagnosis for vitiligo.
His first Malar Rash appeared in 1983 which is interesting because that’s also when he had his second nose job. Dr Strick, the doctor Sneddon had perform the court ordered examination of him in December 1993, had reviewed his medical records and has said that the reason Michael had so many nose jobs was because they were “reconstructive” due to the skin healing problems and scarring associated with his discoid lupus.
When he first started showing the symptoms of Vitiligo and Lupus he thought he had skin cancer. In her book Latoya talks about how he suddenly developed a passion for medicine, spending hundreds of dollars at a time on old medical textbooks and befriending doctors.
When he went to the Australian telephon in ’84 the presenters found it unusual that one of his requests was to visit a bookstore where he purchased an old medical textbook about skin disorders.
In the Glenda tapes in 91/92 he talks abot his health and medicine a lot, seems to refer to his “skin problems” and how he doesn’t tell everyone he knows and even Corey Feldman said Michael would have medical textbooks on skin disorders laying around.
